Active Aging 2011

December 1 - 3, 2011
Orange County Convention Center, Orlando, Florida

Submit your idea - deadline is February 27, 2011

You are invited to submit a written presentation idea for the International Council on Active Aging Conference and trade show in December 2011. The conference is the center of in-person education and networking for professionals who are dedicated to supporting the quality of life of older adults. Delegates seek session topics that reflect their diverse professional responsibilities. The majority have 8 years or more experience, are responsible for division, department and program management and work in CCRCs, independent and assisted living communities as well as senior centers, wellness centers, parks and other community services.

Active-aging philosophy

Active aging means being engaged in life. People, independent of their functional status, have the right and ability to live fully throughout the aging process. The ICAA framework for providing opportunities for active aging are the seven dimensions of wellness. Conference topics reflect the active-aging philosophy.

Selection committee

The conference selection committee is looking for presentation proposals that meet the education goals of the conference. These include:

1.  Application to the dimensions of wellness: emotional, cognitive/intellectual, physical, professional/vocational, social, spiritual and environmental
2.  Topics for wide-ranging responsibilities: programs and activities, exercise application to older adults, trends, working with chronic conditions, marketing and promotions, management and leadership, developing wellness centers, business and finance
3.  Presenter(s) qualifications appropriate for the topic

The conference committee looks for approaches that are inclusionary and positive on multiple levels:

1.   Promote the integration of wellness culture among all disciplines, departments and organizational structures. Active-aging wellness is supported through recreation, education, health promotion, medical care and social services. All these areas must work together towards a mutual purpose of quality of life and the best health possible.
2.   Emphasize what people can do (rather than what they cannot do) and provide options for people with functional limitations to be engaged
3.  Promote philosophies and language that are person-centered, positive and aimed toward successful aging.

Information for presenters

Presenters at the ICAA Active Aging conference have a unique opportunity to contribute to active-aging professionals. The ICAA Conference is the place to share knowledge and move the entire industry forward. Before submitting a proposal, be aware that conference presenters:

  • receive a complimentary registration to all conference activities, including sessions, receptions and trade show.
  • are responsible for their own expenses for travel, accommodation and food. ICAA has a limited budget to cover some travel and accommodations expenses. Speakers will be contacted individually.
  • submit written handouts two months in advance of the conference for inclusion in the   conference handouts collection. If materials change between submission of the handout and the conference the presenter is responsible for bringing new handouts.
  • bring their own laptop and remote control (slide changer) if using a PowerPoint. Any audio visual ordered on site will be invoiced to the presenter.
  • may need to provide their own activity/fitness equipment at their own expense.
  • do not promote a product, service or personal business.

Time block

The only available time block is 1.5 hours. Please ensure the topic WILL work within this time frame.  Shorter or longer sessions are not available.

How to submit proposals

1.  Use one application per session. Maximum 2 presenters per session.
2.  Please complete the application according to the instructions, or the selection committee may not accept it.

ICAA Mission

The International Council on Active Aging (ICAA) is the world's largest association dedicated to changing the way we age by uniting and working with professionals in the retirement, assisted living, recreation, fitness, rehabilitation and wellness fields. It connects a community of like-minded professionals who share the goals of changing society's perceptions of aging and improving the quality of life for aging Baby Boomers and older adults within the seven dimensions of wellness (emotional, vocational, physical, spiritual, intellectual, social, environmental). The council supports these professionals with education, information, resources and tools, so they can achieve optimal success with this growing market.
