ICAA leader shares input at meeting on longevity
Informed by the collective knowledge of the International Council on Active Aging® (ICAA), Founder and CEO Colin Milner recently participated in the World Economic Forum Longevity Round Table. The event, held in collaboration with Swiss Re and the World Demographic & Ageing Forum, took place at the Swiss Re Global Centre for Dialogue in Rüschlikon, Switzerland. The meeting’s results will provide input to the World Economic Forum’s annual Global Risks report.

At the Round Table, experts from around the world discussed the impact of such factors as increasing longevity on the global economic challenges related to population aging. The meeting’s “overriding” and “uncontested” message, according to an article on the Swiss Re center’s website, was that “the demographic shift is not in and of itself a risk.” This shift can be managed with economic and social reforms, the article continues. “The risk is that states are not sufficiently proactive in pushing reform; and society does not accept that major reforms are necessary.”

Workshop to influence Europe’s healthy aging policy
As part of ongoing efforts to promote healthy aging, the European Commission’s Health and Consumers Directorate-General held daylong brainstorming workshops in October, and invited ICAA CEO Colin Milner to participate. Milner was one of 20 participants at a workshop in Brussels, Belgium, aimed at focusing innovations in health and health technology to older adults’ needs. Outcomes are expected to inform a healthy aging policy initiative—including recommendations and key actions—at the European Union level.

New ICAA report examines industry segments
What does population aging mean for those who provide products, services and environments that can help older adults obtain or maintain a better quality of life? The active-aging industry’s response to what many call one of the most significant global opportunities of the 21st century will dictate its success. ICAA partners with physical therapy group
Launched in September in conjunction with Active Aging Week, a promotional partnership between ICAA and the Section on Geriatrics (SOG) of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) will see the two organizations collaborating to benefit the health of adults over 50. The SOG—which serves a national membership of over 5,000 physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, and students—strongly advocates the importance of exercise and physical activity for adults as they age. ICAA looks forward to working with the Section on Geriatrics to help change the way society perceives aging.

Chain aligns with ICAA
As part of a new alliance with ICAA, leading fitness chain 24 Hour Fitness will review ways to make its portfolio of clubs more relevant and accessible to older active adults. By assessing club amenities, group-exercise class programming, marketing and operations, the company hopes to support ICAA’s mission of improving quality of life for aging Boomers through fitness. “Like ICAA, 24 Hour Fitness believes that physical activity changes lives and can make a dramatic impact on the quality of life for people of all ages—especially older adults,” says Randy Drake, senior vice president of fitness and business development for 24 Hour Fitness.
