ICAA founder receives Can-Fit-Pro award
Can-Fit-Pro, an organization dedicated to Canadian fitness professionals, has honored Colin Milner, founder and CEO of the International Council on Active Aging® (ICAA), with its 2010 Lifetime Achievement Award. One of Can-Fit-Pro’s Delegates’ Choice Awards, the Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes Milner’s many accomplishments in health and wellness—particularly his efforts to advance active aging. The ICAA leader received this award on August 13 at the opening ceremonies of the Can-Fit-Pro annual conference and trade show in Toronto, Ontario.
“I’m honored and privileged to be presented with Can-Fit-Pro’s Lifetime Achievement Award,” says Milner, whose career in the health and wellness field began in 1982. “This award is really a reflection of all those who, over the years, have dedicated themselves to the mission of Changing the way we age®. I’m grateful for their extraordinary support.”
UK board member shapes active-aging initiative
ICAA Advisory Board Member Bob Laventure, MEd, is at the forefront of a new active-aging initiative in the United Kingdom. Laventure leads the older-adult program at the British Heart Foundation (BHF) National Centre for Physical Activity and Health at Loughborough University. Inspired by models in several countries, the BHF National Centre has launched “Active Ageing events,” a program to promote active aging in the UK. In 2010, the center will work with the UK Department for Work and Pensions’ Full of Life campaign to promote active-aging events on October 1, the UK Day for Older People. Program information and resources are available at www.active-ageing-events.org.uk.
Milner continues global network participation
The World Economic Forum recently invited ICAA CEO Colin Milner to take part in its Network of Global Agenda Councils for the third consecutive year. Milner is eager to continue his work with the network—this year, as a member of the Global Agenda Council on Ageing 2010.
Based in Geneva, Switzerland, the World Economic Forum is an independent, nonprofit organization “committed to improving the state of the world by engaging leaders in partnerships to shape global, regional and industry agendas.” The Network of Global Agenda Councils is designed to further the Forum’s mission and strategic vision, and tackle global issues of vital importance. Each of the 72 Global Agenda Councils for 2010–2011 brings together 15–20 international experts “to capture the very best knowledge on each key issue and to stimulate knowledge-generating activities in a holistic approach” that engages multiple stakeholders. These councils serve as informal advisory boards to the Forum and, through the organization, to the international community.
In late November, Milner will again return to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates for the third annual Summit on the Global Agenda, a meeting that fosters long-range, interdisciplinary thinking on global issues. His role with the network has expanded this year to include other Forum events as well. As of press time, Milner is expected to participate in the Forum’s expert roundtable on longevity, to be held on August 25 in Rüschlikon, Switzerland, in collaboration with Swiss Re and the World Demographic & Ageing Forum.
Spreading the word about active aging
The 11th Annual National Active Retirement Association (NARA) Business Conference will include a presentation by ICAA CEO Colin Milner, who will take a futurist’s look at active aging. NARA’s 2010 conference takes place October 20–22 at the Columbia Convention Center in South Carolina. Event information is available online at www.retirementlivingnews.com.
