Stats: Only 9% of sport and exercise science studies include older women

Action is urgently needed to address the dearth of older women in sport and exercise science, not only for the sake of the growing numbers of female athletes, but for women's health in general, a group of international researchers urged in an editorial, published online in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. Additional research in this area will also inform active-aging community management and perhaps offer opportunities for collaboration.

Like many organizations, AARP recently released its tech trend predictions for this year, and they're of course worth a read. In a nutshell, the report highlights, with specific examples, the "noticeable shift" in tech adoption by adults 50+, who are now on a par with adults ages 18-49 when it comes to tech device ownership; continued spending by this demographic on smart appliances; active engagement with digital services, especially via apps instead of websites only; streaming most, if not all, entertainment content; and using tech to stay connected with family and friends.

Many older adults are already using artificial intelligence (AI) every day, as virtual assistants such as Siri and Alexa, smart-home devices, GPS, and other technologies, according to a recent study by the Mather Institute. The study explores the ways in which older adults use the technology, their concerns about its use, and thoughts on how AI should be used in the future.

Stats: 50% of employees uncomfortable discussing mental health

Even before the pandemic took hold, an estimated one in eight people globally were living with a mental health disorder. This was exacerbated by the pandemic, with estimates putting the subsequent rise in anxiety and depressive disorders at over 25%, according to a new report from Interact, a global workplace software company. While residents and members are affected, so are staff. Citing the American Psychiatric Association that only 50% of employees are comfortable discussing mental health issues, and inspired by the Ipsos World Mental Health Day report, Interact recently released a guide for supporting good mental health in the workplace.
