Although the importance of a healthy weight is frequently touted by the medical community, weight loss has traditionally been discouraged among older people, partly because of health concerns over inadvertent reductions in muscle and bone mass. A study from Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, supports the benefits of intentional weight loss for this population. The researchers found that physical activity and weight loss conducted together for older overweight and obese adults improves body composition, translating into lower cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk and better mobility.

For the Look AHEAD (Action for Health in Diabetes) multicenter clinical trial, individuals (N = 5,145) between 45-75 years of age with Type 2 diabetes and a body-mass index of 25 or greater were randomly assigned to a four-year Intensive Lifestyle Intervention group (weight management and increased physical activity) or a Support and Education group (general health information and social support).

People who are overweight and have elevated blood glucose levels are at risk of acquiring diabetes. A large clinical research study, the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) showed that people who lost a modest amount of weight through dietary changes and increased physical activity reduced their chances of developing diabetes. The DPP lifestyle program was effective in a clinical setting, but would it work in the community?
