The International Council on Active Aging highlights excellence and creativity in active aging with its ICAA Innovators Awards program. The 2015 awards honor those that lead the way, set new standards, and make a difference in the lives of adults over 50.

At Atria El Camino Gardens in Carmichael, California, residents feel the need to make a difference in the lives of neighbors in the community-at-large. That desire to contribute to others led the community to start the Atria El Camino Gardens Good Samaritan Outreach program in 2013. ... "Our residents are people of action and service," comments Engage Life Director Staci Weisz. "Our job is to facilitate their goals and support them as they continue to learn, grow and make a difference.”

Brain Waves: Cultivating brain health at Asbury Methodist Village

Escalating resident interest in brain health led Asbury Methodist Village to launch a program in 2013 called "Brain Waves." This program educates participants about brain health and how to cultivate it. "We weren’t sure how Brain Waves would be received," admits Wellness Associate and Brain Fitness Facilitator Susan Grotenhuis. "But the residents have embraced it, and it's opened up the path for other brain-fitness initiatives."

The "Attitude of Gratitude" program launched in January 2014 to encourage residents to develop a new attitude for the New Year. The two-month program turned into a memorable experience for everyone at Oak Harbor, and an atmosphere of positivity permeated community life. "It was one of the most awesome programs we’ve ever done," shares Wellness Director Susan Wright.
