DEIB survey, toolkit released for senior living

The first diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB) survey and toolkit for senior living was released November 9. The survey, conducted by Ferguson Partners, collected information across the participating companies and reviews both the degree to which DEIB programs are deployed and the diversity of their respective staff. The survey also indicated opportunities for senior living companies to give more focus to DEIB efforts. The DEIB Toolkit was developed for interested companies to customize programs suited to their respective firms.

Fewer than half of older adults discuss alcohol with providers

Over one quarter of U.S. adults age 65 and older who used alcohol and had a healthcare visit in the past year were not asked about their alcohol use with their healthcare providers, according to a recent study that included data from more than 9,600 adults (about half men/women). Alcohol use is something active-aging organizations should be aware of with regard to their members and communities, especially since some recent studies suggest that alcohol use and abuse are increasing among older adults.

Over the past two decades, Canada's labor force has seen greater numbers of people staying in the work force longer. However, widespread ageist views may be responsible for persistent negative beliefs and attitudes about older workers and their role in the workforce, according to the Forum of Federal/Provincial/Territorial Ministers Responsible for Seniors' new report, "Older Workers: Exploring and Addressing the Stereotypes." The report has lessons for organizations and companies across countries, as well as action steps to help create change.

Deloitte's Connectivity and Mobile Trends 2021 Survey reveals that US households keep adding more connected devices, something that quickly became overwhelming. In fact, according to Deloitte, the pandemic was "a giant beta test of behaviors" that broke down barriers, removed distance, and prioritized health and wellness.

Stats: Two-thirds of ALFs reported no COVID-19 deaths

Nearly two-thirds of assisted living facilities reported no deaths from COVID-19 in 2020, according to a new study by NORC at the University of Chicago. The study calculates that average adjusted death rates from COVID-19 in assisted living was 19.3 per 1,000 residents.
