Both the ability to balance and walking gait are factors in the risk of falling. As noted in NIH Senior Health, poor balance or walking difficulty may be related to lack of exercise or a medical condition. People who are not confident that they can balance well may limit their movements for fear of falling, which leads them to restrict their activities.

Fall prevention programs are cost-effective, according to the results of a study reported earlier this year in ICAA Research Review (10[3] January 2010). This analysis found that tai chi, medication management, vitamin D supplementation and home modifications were the most cost effective among eight interventions.
