Both publications collect data from a number of federal surveys and bureaus. One group of numbers details the chronic conditions prevalent at older ages, many of which are related to lifestyle.

Some risks of back pain can be changed by lifestyle choices

A review of 26 million records of patients in 13 health care systems across the United States uncovered 1.2 million people with diagnosed low back pain. Individuals with a statistically significant relative risk of low back pain had been diagnosed with depressive disorder, obesity, nicotine dependence or alcohol abuse.

Hot weather: Extreme heat increases risk of hospitalization

Extreme weather events are becoming more common, and high temperatures are one of them. During periods of high heat between 1999-2010, people 65 years and older who were enrolled in Medicare (US health insurance) had a higher risk of hospitalization, most frequently for fluid and electrolyte disorders, kidney failure, urinary tract infections, septicemia and heat stroke. Data from 1,943 counties was used.

The National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHAT) was developed to capture information on the daily lives of people 65 years and older in the United States who are beneficiaries of Medicare, the federal health insurance. In a special issue, findings from the 2011 NHAT reveal how older adults are impacted by late-life disability (Journals of Gerontology: Social Science).
