Low back pain is primary cause of disability worldwide

Low back pain causes more disability around the world than any of the other 291 medical conditions cited in the Global Burden of Disease 2010 Study, found a new analysis. At a global prevalence of 9.4%, low back pain (with and without pain radiating down the legs) was highest in terms of disability and sixth in terms of disability-adjusted life years (DALY), an estimate of the years of “healthy” life lost due to a disability.

Healthcare providers urged to encourage healthy habits and curtail preventable deaths

In 2010, more than 200,000 deaths from heart disease and stroke could have been prevented, according to a “Vital Signs” report released in September by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The report defined preventable deaths as those that occurred in people under age 75 that could have been prevented by more effective public health measures, lifestyle changes such as controlling high blood pressure or quitting smoking, or medical care.

People with chronic musculoskeletal pain develop similar attitudes, according to a meta-ethnography of 77 studies. Meta-ethnography is a systematic approach to synthesizing qualitative research. The trends the authors found among people reporting chronic pain included feeling uncertain about the future, and being constantly aware of the pain restricting their bodies. They also felt it was impossible to prove that they had pain, and therefore their doctors and healthcare providers may not believe them.

Pain is “an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage, or described in terms of such damage,” according to the International Association for the Study of Pain.
