In 2016, milestones aplenty gave the International Council on Active Aging cause to celebrate and give thanks--most particularly, for the support and efforts of the ICAA community--and to get ready for a new era of "Changing the Way We Age." The association that promotes active aging blazed its way through 2017 with developments to help the industry grow and organizations and professionals to flourish.

"Changing the Way We Age": Members of ICAA's community share highlights

As summer came to a close last year, the International Council on Active Aging invited our community of members, supporters and allies to look back over 15 years of Changing the Way We Age. We urged you to help us not only celebrate all we've accomplished together, but also to recognize your achievements as individual organizations, teams and professionals. Well, your stories and photographs soon started arriving. You shared your highlights and your experiences from active-aging journeys--from the touching and thoughtful, to the joyous and triumphant. You delighted us, moved us, amazed and inspired us. Thank you to everyone who sent submissions. It's been a privilege to publish these accounts in the Journal on Active Aging over the past year. This issue shares six final submissions.

Trends in technology purchases by Patricia Ryan, MS

In the active-aging industry, there are two sides to every story. One point of view is that of 50+ consumers who seek the products and services that are compatible with their lifestyles or needs. The other side of the story is voiced by professionals who provide those products and services in all types of locations--senior living communities and private homes, apartments and parks, community centers and clubs. Awareness of the interests of the 50+ consumer was high among the professionals who answered the ICAA Active-Aging Industry Development Survey earlier this year. The consensus, when the ICAA team looked at trends, was that Boomers and technology are top of mind.

Through programming, environments, products and services, organizations that promote active aging make a difference in people's lives every day. Efforts to support older-adult wellness respond to needs, inspire action and address dreams and expectations of multiple generations-one person at a time. For its 15th anniversary celebrations in 2016, the International Council on Active Aging invited the ICAA Community-members, supporters and allies-to share memorable moments and achievements from their journeys of Changing the Way We Age. The Journal on Active Aging has spotlighted some of these submissions, including the three stories in this issue.

Active Aging Week: Share your experiences for recognition and promotion

What would it take to ignite passion among your staff, residents and/or members? What about their families and friends? How about your management team or ownership? And your neighborhood or community at large? The answer may be staring you in the mirror. By igniting your passion, you may spark the desire in others to embrace their own, inspiring them to "do" more and enhance quality of life through active aging—for themselves and for others. Active aging is all about "being engaged in life." As a host site for Active Aging Week, the annual ICAA-led campaign highlighting people's ability to live fully at any age, you can inspire your community to come together and celebrate what it means to engage in life.

Active-aging professionals may work in different settings and with diverse populations, but they share a passion for improving older-adult quality of life. Members and supporters of the International Council on Active Aging also share the vision of Changing the Way We Age. Since ICAA's launch in fall 2001, on-the-ground efforts by the collective ICAA Community have made a difference in the lives of millions of people worldwide.
