Tech Talk: Motion capture for creating metaverse avatars launches
Sony has released a mobile motion capture "mocopi" that uses lightweight sensors to transmit real-time motion input to a smartphone, creating virtual reality avatars that move at the same time and in the same way that the user does. Users attach small sensors to their head, both wrists, hips, and both ankles with a Velcro band or clip, connecting them via Bluetooth to Sony's smartphone app. With that motion capture data, the user can either export the motion capture as an MP4 video, or directly translate movements into compatible apps, such as VRChat, which is partnering with Sony for the product launch.

Stats: 65% of residents say robots improved dining experience
Despite the challenges brought about by staffing shortages, a new white paper says that one way to bring innovation into senior living may be found in applying a high-tech solution for a high-touch impact: robot servers in the dining rooms. "The robots are intended not to replace but to work alongside humans to help address staffing challenges first experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic and simultaneously to elevate the customer experience," said Kari Olson, president of FPCIW. "We're pleased that efforts to continue the use of the dining robots beyond the pilot have been supported by the communities, and we look forward to bringing this technology to other Front Porch communities."

Tech: Virtual reality can relieve end-of-life pain
In a pilot study, researchers investigated the feasibility of a single virtual reality (VR) experience as a satisfying, and effective tool for end-of-life pain relief for individuals receiving palliative care in an inpatient setting. Forty-five participants (average age, 52; about half, women) were offered a one-time VR experience with a selection of several videos and games. Significant pain reduction was evident during and immediately after the experience. No serious side effects were reported during the intervention; however, afterwards, three patients were nauseous, to had headaches, and three had dry eyes.

Social media helps people feel connected to others
A new Gallup report, released in collaboration with Meta, found that despite social disruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, most people across the countries studied said they felt connected to others. The report is based on an in-depth, Meta-commissioned survey of people's social connections in Brazil, Egypt, France, India, Indonesia, Mexico and the United States. Representative population samples of least 2,000 people ages 15+ in each country, surveyed between April and June 2022, were included. The insights can help inform efforts to encourage social media interaction in active-aging communities.

Tech Talk: E-bike use tied to less moderate-vigorous physical activity
E-bikes aren't likely to help users reach weekly moderate-to-vigorous physical activity targets, because riders tend to take fewer and less physically demanding trips than conventional cyclists, suggests a recent study. However, the researchers speculate that
e-bikes may persuade older and/or overweight people who wouldn't otherwise consider using a bike to try the e-bike.
