Reduce obesity to reduce osteoarthritis symptoms
Obesity is prevalent among older adults. For example, in the US in 2005-2008, 35.6% of people 65-74 years and 25.9% of people 75+ were considered obese (National Center for Health Statistics). Osteoarthritis is also more common as people age, affecting about 33.6% of the US population 65 years and older. The knee is a common site of osteoarthritis.

Obesity weighs heavy on quality of life
As noted in the CDC analysis above, obesity is associated with an increased risk for coronary heart disease, hypertension, stroke, type 2 diabetes, certain types of cancer and premature death as well as reduced quality of life, social stigmatization and discrimination.
