The ICAA/ProMatura Wellness Benchmarks measure the wellness program’s contribution to the retirement community’s mission and business objectives.
The wellness program’s results are organized into a standardized set of metrics that track:
Realizing that the next step for active aging was to show the business contribution of a wellness program, International Council on Active Aging facilitated multiple groups of active-aging industry leaders who identified business indicators that are relevant for high-level decision making.
The ProMatura Group brought their expertise in research and metrics for the senior living environment to the project. ICAA’s knowledge of wellness and active aging combined with ProMatura’s knowledge of data collection and analysis to finalize the ICAA/ProMatura Wellness Benchmarks.
The system is currently available to retirement communities with independent living and assisted living. This is the first phase of the benchmarking; additional types of organizations will be added in the future.
The metrics were designed to be useful regardless of organizational structure. Wellness opportunities may be housed in one or more functional areas:
Communities enter their information into password-protected, secure online questionnaires, divided into 3 sections. There is no charge to enter the system. There is the responsibility to enter data accurately and maintain the system over time.
The system is supported by a Benchmarking Toolkit of instructions, forms and handouts that explain step-by-step how to use the system. In addition, online ICAA webinars and meetings at the ICAA Active Aging Conference guide users through the system.
Both individual community and industry reports are produced from the ICAA/ProMatura Wellness Benchmarks.
For the individual community, the ICAA/ProMatura Wellness Benchmarks produce a consistent report that can be used for program and facility analysis, quality improvement and comparison to indicators produced by other departments.
For the industry, the national benchmarks are a valuable tool to see the landscape of wellness in retirement living, and identify the facilities, programs, staffing and other resources that lead to competitive advantage, resident health and overall satisfaction.
