ICAA leader to educate Canadian government about active aging
(April 24, 2007; Vancouver, BC) How will an aging population affect Canada, a country where almost one in three citizens is already aged 50 or older? And what can the nation's government do to help its citizens age well? To help it explore these challenges, Canada's Special Senate Committee on Aging has invited one of North America's leading visionaries and original thinkers on the health and well-being of older adults, Colin Milner, to appear in May. Milner is CEO of the International Council on Active Aging (ICAA), an association that supports professionals who develop wellness and fitness facilities and services for adults over 50.
Among the many issues being examined by members of the Special Senate Committee on Aging, several focus on health-related matters. These include promoting active living and well-being, health promotion and prevention, and healthcare needs. Milner will travel to Ottawa, Canada's capital, to present his views and answer questions on active living. The Committee is expected to report its findings by year's end.
"I'm extremely pleased with this occasion to talk to the Special Senate Committee on Aging about the challenges facing Canada," says Milner. "As ICAA's leader, my goal is to help the federal government understand the challenges involved in addressing inactivity and getting more people over 50 moving. I look forward to suggesting ways in which the government might tackle these challenges," he continues. "But I especially want to convey the opportunities and benefits within reach if Canada increases the number of older adults who are active and engaged in life."
Milner has contributed to a number of initiatives that promote active aging, including helping to develop the US National Blueprint: Increasing Physical Activity Among Adults Aged 50 and Older, and submitting a vision paper to the 2006 White House Conference on Aging. Most recently, Milner participated in the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games Think Tank in Vancouver, Canada.
