Expert in active aging to advise 2010 Olympic planners on featuring older adults during the Winter Games

(March 20, 2007, Vancouver, BC.) How does the sporting event that thrives on very fit, very young competitors reach out to people who are over 65 years old? How can the winter sports competition highlight the vital role that seniors play as role models and experts? To help answer those questions, Olympic planners invited one of North Americas foremost visionaries and original thinkers regarding the health and well-being of the older adult, Colin Milner, CEO of the International Council on Active Aging (ICAA), to participate in the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games Think Tank next week.

“Our mission at ICAA is to help change society’s negative perceptions of aging by identifying the strategies that keep older adults engaged in life,” explained Colin Milner. “Active adults are healthier, happier and contribute to their families and their communities. Showcasing the active lifestyles of older adults at the 2010 Olympics is a tremendous opportunity to publicize that image.”

Milner has contributed to a number of initiatives that promote active aging, including helping to develop the US National Blueprint: Increasing Physical Activity Among Adults Aged 50 and Older, submitting a vision paper to the 2006 White House Conference on Aging and presenting numerous sessions at professional conferences on trends in active aging.

“My goal is to help the Olympics Think Tank envision a role for older adults that goes beyond volunteering,” said Milner, “although that is an important part to play. The global media coverage of the Games enables us to highlight how an active lifestyle can bring many benefits throughout the life span.”

The 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games Think Tank takes place March 26, 2007, in Vancouver, British Columbia.
