Active Aging Week all set to 'ignite passions' in its milestone year

(Vancouver, BC, August 25, 2017) – As summer gives way to fall, hundreds of thousands of adults in their 50s and beyond will gather at senior living communities, parks, community and senior centers, health and fitness clubs, wellness centers, YMCAs and JCCs as well as other venues to celebrate Active Aging Week®. The international event -- hosted by organizations in local communities across the United States, Canada and Australia -- is held each year in the last full week of September. In 2017, this festival of wellness in aging takes place throughout the week of September 24-30.

Established in 2003, Active Aging Week highlights the passion that people have for life and new experiences at any age. That is why the campaign’s organizer, the International Council on Active Aging® (ICAA), chose the theme “Ignite your passion” to celebrate the week’s 15th anniversary year.

Over the past 14 years, millions of people have come together during Active Aging Week to embrace their potential and to help shift negative perceptions of aging in their local communities. In 2017, more than 3,000 host organizations are all set to again advance active, healthy aging in their centers, communities, cities, states and countries.

Hosts, volunteers and older adults connect in a spirit of camaraderie for a week of fun, free or low-cost wellness events created to encourage participation and showcase the wealth of options for individuals to ignite their own passions. Hosts challenge their creativity to design events that capture the imaginations of participants. Expect everything from dancing and drumming to ziplines and yoga, brain games to barbecues, cooking classes to skin health and footcare. Indoors or out, big or small, physical, emotional, mental or spiritual, the possibilities are endless to spark a passion of the mind, body or spirit.

To host Active Aging Week, organizations need only register at activeagingweek.com, plan events (a single activity or as many as they like), and promote them. Resources and planning tools are available to help hosts achieve success with their events. Organizers in host organizations can access free materials on the campaign website, including T-shirt designs, posters and social media tools. They can also watch webinars and download resources such as planning guides and worksheets.

Additionally, national sponsors offer free resources through the Active Aging Week website. Host organizations may incorporate these resources in optional theme days (or programming) on AquaDance, Get Skin Health Smart, Eat Healthy/Stay Strong and the wellness event “WALK! with Aegis Therapies.” Sponsors in 2017 include SwimEx, Nestle Skin Health, Abbott and Aegis Therapies/EnerG by Aegis, respectively.

Adults and family members wanting to participate in events should check with their local senior living communities, parks and recreation departments, community and senior centers, hospital wellness centers, YMCA, JCCs, and others to see what’s planned. Information is also available on social media using the hashtag #activeagingweek.
