The Chronic Musculoskeletal Challenges & Exercise continuing education course will teach fitness professionals how to work more effectively with clients who have arthritis, osteoporosis and low back pain.

One out of every four adults has experienced back pain in the last three months and 80% of Americans will suffer from at least one episode of back pain in their lives. Half of women over age 50 will experience an osteoporotic fracture, and one in five (46 million) Americans have some form of arthritis. This means you will inevitably see clients with one or more of these challenges in your personal training practice. This course will help you design and adapt an exercise program for individuals with arthritis, osteoporosis and low back pain. Become knowledgeable in exercise selection, modification and progressions specific to these musculoskeletal ailments. Learn about specific risk factors, symptoms and health consequences and when to refer your client back to a healthcare provider.

Course Objectives

  • Describe the risk factors and causes of low back pain, osteoporosis and arthritis.
  • Identify strategies for reducing injury risk and/or decreasing joint stress.
  • Design and/or adapt a safe and effective exercise program for an individual with low back pain, osteoporosis/osteopenia or arthritis.
  • List exercise activities that should be avoided in clients with low back pain, osteoporosis or arthritis.
  • Identify and understand nutritional considerations related to osteoporosis.
