Strength Programming for Older Adults

Strength Programming for Older Adults provides fitnessprofessionals with the principles and practical information necessary for implementing safe, sensible, effective and efficient programs of muscle-building exercise for senior men and women. This course includes the training rationale, training recommendations (general principles and specific protocols), and teaching guidelines (instructional techniques) for senior strength exercise. After completing this course, participants should be competent to design and teach basic, research-based strength-training programs for older adults.

Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Identify three fitness-related benefits of senior strength training, three health-related benefits of senior strength training, and three research-based physical changes senior participants can expect following 10 to 15 weeks of regular strength training
  • Describe the basic senior strength-training protocol with respect to exercises, sets, repetitions, resistance, progression, range, speed, and frequency
  • Explain the basic instructional techniques shown to be most successful for senior strength training
  • Provide key training modifications for seniors with common medical conditions
  • Describe two methods seniors may use for more challenging strength-training sessions
