Leaders of the pack

Demographers have predicted that baby boomers will change industries as they age. But the boomers just started turning 55 this year, and a recent trend report proves the age wave has already hit health and fitness clubs. What gives?

The 2000 IHRSA/ASD Health Club Trend Report shows that earlier generations are embracing physical activity at a phenomenal rate. Between 1987 and 2000, club memberships in the 55-plus demographic rose an astonishing 379%. In that same 13-year period, clubs recorded an overall membership growth of 89% (17,351,000 to 32,808,000).
