Reducing social isolation may reduce mortality

The social contacts with family and friends along with engagement in civic activities for 6,500 men and women ages 52 and older who took part in the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (2004-2005) were analyzed, along with their answers to a questionnaire measuring loneliness. These findings were compared to mortality data after an average 7.5 years of follow-up.
