Physical and social activities need a boost in nursing homes

In the state of Massachusetts, nursing home residents and their families completed surveys rating their satisfaction with the home on a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 meaning very dissatisfied and 5 meaning very satisfied. Analysis of data collected in 2005, 2007 and 2009 showed that overall satisfaction was consistently high, ranked at 4.09 to 4.16. However, 25% of homes received scores of “less than satisfactory.” Nursing homes with higher scores tended to have higher staffing levels, fewer citations for deficiencies, and be owned by non-profits or governments.

Family members gave a lower rating to the physical activities and social activities available in the nursing homes, and they also were less satisfied with the meals and food options.
