More than a game: Tennis is a world of opportunity for 50-plus volunteers by Krystyna Kasprzak, BA

On a muggy afternoon in Toronto last summer, I was on my way to the 2010 Rogers Cup presented by National Bank—a tournament held by Tennis Canada at the Rexall Centre each year—when the car I was traveling in became stuck in rush-hour traffic. My driver was a cheerful and energetic man in his late 50s named Len,1 and as he maneuvered the car through the near gridlock, I engaged him in casual conversation. Attitude and generosity make giving a year-round event by Colleen Koziara

The Year of Caring and Sharing started as an average annual food drive in 2009. For the Thanksgiving season, all Pathway Senior Living Supportive Living Communities were working to collect food for the food banks in Chicago. We really advertised the food drive and encouraged not only our staff, but also our residents and even the families of our residents and staff to participate.

The Pathway residents, including those with limited financial resources, were able to contribute more than 3,700 pounds of food to the Chicago-area food banks. Retirees in Service to the Environment: cultivating volunteers with impact by Caron Petersen, MSW

On an October day in 2008, four recuperating birds from a local wildlife sanctuary captivated two-dozen spectators in the activity room at Bahia Oaks Lodge, a Brookdale Senior Living retirement community in Sarasota, Florida. RISE is an environmental education and volunteerism program that involves retirees ages 60 and over in local environmental volunteer activities.

Online learning for the 50-plus adult by Cody Sipe, MS

If your email inbox isn’t inundated with ads for products to improve your sexual performance or opportunities to refinance your home mortgage, then it may well be filled with solicitations to take an online course or get an online degree. Internet-based education programs (also called e-learning, e-education or online learning) are revolutionizing learning as we know it. Never before have organizations had so many opportunities to reach potential participants with continued education—from studying for formal academic degrees to learning a new language, to simply pursuing hobbies and interests. This learning medium is growing exponentially today. It is also proving to be useful in engaging and educating middle-aged and older constituents.
