Cultural sensitivity needed to promote healthier eating
The risk of hypertension (high blood pressure) increases with age and with African-American heritage. The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) eating plan has been shown to help people reduce blood pressure. DASH emphasizes eating fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy products, whole grains, fish, poultry, beans, seeds and nuts. The plan asks individuals to reduce their intakes of sweets, added sugars and sugary beverages, and red meats.

Within the rankings of body weight, “normal” weight, estimated at a body mass index (BMI) between 18.5-24.9, is considered to be a healthy weight because of the lower risk of illnesses associated with overweight and obesity (for example, cardiovascular disease and diabetes). Weight loss lowers risk of breast cancer
The risk of a diagnosis of breast cancer increases with age. For example, in the United States, the median age of diagnosis was 61 years in 2005-2009. Among the risk factors are obesity, excessive alcohol, hormone therapy (estrogen-progestin combination) and inheritance. Exercise is associated with a decreased risk of breast cancer.
