Tai Chi increases balance confidence
Both the ability to balance and walking gait are factors in the risk of falling. As noted in NIH Senior Health, poor balance or walking difficulty may be related to lack of exercise or a medical condition. People who are not confident that they can balance well may limit their movements for fear of falling, which leads them to restrict their activities.

Piano music inspires movement that reduces falls
Fall prevention is a major focus in programs for older adults, since one in three US adults fall each year, and falls are the leading cause of injury death (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).
In a variation on group exercise to music, an intervention was designed so that participants moved according to the rhythms in piano music.

Multicomponent program reduces number of falls
Fall prevention programs are cost-effective, according to the results of a study reported earlier this year in ICAA Research Review (10[3] January 2010). This analysis found that tai chi, medication management, vitamin D supplementation and home modifications were the most cost effective among eight interventions. A new study adds more information to the mix of effective programs.
