Taking culture change and mission beyond our walls by Kelly A. Stranburg, MEd, EP-C, CSCS

How do we cultivate a culture and integrate it throughout an organization to support vitality and well-being for older adults? At Sharon Towers in Charlotte, North Carolina, we set out on an extensive culture-change journey nearly two years ago, sharing our experiences with Journal on Active Aging readers throughout 2016. The culture-change process, as we discovered, takes time, collaboration, and being open to obstacles. Among the other things we've learned, there are many ways to impart our organization's goal and mission, both internally and externally. Today, our culture-change journey is impacting an operational requirement and thus community outreach to aid many older adults in aging well.

Menorah Park's Center 4 Brain Health supports cognitive wellness journeys

Menorah Park has delivered premier senior care in northeast Ohio for more than 110 years. Located in Beachwood, a suburb of Cleveland, the organization serves more than 1,000 older adults each day who either live on the 42-acre campus or in their own homes "with excellence in caring guided by Jewish values," according to its marketing messages. The nonprofit today identifies itself as "a provider of health and wellness services to all people as they age." In addition to a full continuum of residential care, Menorah Park provides an array of support services, including the Center 4 Brain Health, "the first non-pharmacological, non-hospital based Brain Health Center located in a senior care community in the United States."

The hit CBS television show The Amazing Race begins with the host declaring, "The world is waiting for you. Good luck. Travel safe. Go!" Many watch that grand adventure and say, "That looks like so much fun—but I could never." Not so fast. Touchmark on South Hill staff decided, "Why not? Let’s do it!" At this full-service retirement community in Spokane, Washington, residents head off on an annual springtime adventure with this motivating message: "Be safe. And have fun!" So what does the program involve, for both staff and participants? And what tips can help others create similar adventures? Let's explore!

Mentoring to sharing memories. Green Hills connects Techy Teens with Savvy Seniors

At Green Hills Community in West Liberty, Ohio, the focus is on "enriching all seasons of life." The nonprofit, faith-based senior living and care provider offers services for the spectrum of older adults. Residents have the community's support in enhancing multidimensional wellness, with "enriching life experiences" and lifestyles that promote healthy, active living. In 2015, Green Hills introduced the Techy Teens--Savvy Seniors program, which brought high school students and older adults together in an exchange that expanded over time and created relationships and understanding between the generations.

"Healthy Aging Never Gets Old": A Wellness Institute campaign engages the community

The Wellness Institute in Winnipeg, Canada, “is an important part of the continuum of care—from prevention, to recovery and rehabilitation,” says Executive Director Casie Nishi. A “self-supporting nonprofit organization,” the certified medical fitness facility is part of (or, as it prefers, “powered by”) Seven Oaks General Hospital, an acute-care community hospital serving the northwest region of Manitoba’s capital city. In 2016, its 20th anniversary year, the Institute launched a public awareness campaign whose messages highlighted healthy aging and its benefits to all Winnipeggers.

An active faith inspires the desire to serve others and contribute to the quality of their lives. The question for the individual or organization is how to do so. For two faith-based recipients of the 2017 NuStep Pinnacle Award, the answer lies in providing services that meet the needs of older adults and support whole-person wellness.
