Broad-based memory training program shows results
As the number of older adults increases, so does the number of misplaced car keys and forgotten names. As a summary of brain training research explains, the brain is a complex organ with over 100 billion nerve cells (neurons), linked by synapses and activated by neurotransmmitters. As people age, the number of neurons and synapses declines. Yet, research indicates it may be possible to improve some brain functions (German Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care).

A research team wanted to look at the mechanisms behind the brain’s ability to improve memory ability following training in people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), a condition marked by a decline in thinking ability and memory that does not interfere in daily functioning.
