Social networks may protect cognitive function when work stops

Social networks may help protect cognitive functioning in later life, particularly among older adults who are no longer working, researchers say. Their study found that social connections can help compensate for the loss of mentally stimulating interactions linked to work, and that these effects differ notably between men and women. The findings may be of interest to active-aging communities whose residents or members recently retired or stopped working for other reasons.
