Are families or friends more important for well-being?

After acknowledging that social connections are considered a requirement for well-being at older ages, the authors of a recent study posed a question. Since relationships with family members are obligatory, and relationships with friends are voluntary, is there a difference in how each contributes to feelings of well-being?
