Stats: 35% of outdoor sports participants are older adults

The Outdoor Industry Association and Outdoor Foundation recently released findings from the "2023 Outdoor Participation Trends Report." The report reveals that the outdoor recreation participation base grew 2.3% in 2022 to a record 168.1M participants, or 55% of the US population over age 6. The report also found that the new participant base is becoming increasingly more diverse in terms of ethnicity, race, age, and sexual and gender identity.

Over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids, recently available in the United States, were associated with a greater uptake of hearing aid use and were cost-effective over a range of prices. However, the benefits depend on how beneficial the OTC aid is to a patient's quality of life -- i.e., more than 55% compared to a traditional hearing aid.

Midlife physical activity, healthy behaviors vital for active later life

In a study of close to 4,000 older adults (age range, 60-83; 25%, women). with accelerometer data, barriers associated with decreased physical activity and increased sedentary behavior in later life were already evident in midlife. This suggests that implementation in midlife of policies that integrate physical activity and other healthy behaviors may be an effective approach to promote an active lifestyle in older age, the authors said. The findings are especially important for independent living and for active-aging staff in midlife.

Thai community program curbs family caregiver burden

In developing countries, aging populations and lack of universal access to long-term care place the burden of care for older adults on their families. To mitigate this, researchers have implemented a community-integrated intermediary care model in Thailand. This service has proven effective in reducing caregiver burden and improving the functional ability and independence of older adults. The multi-pronged model includes care prevention activities, capacity building for family caregivers, and community respite services, and provides context for ongoing efforts to improve a global problem.
