Epidemiologists compared data from two national surveys that used separate tests (fasting blood glucose test and oral glucose tolerance test) to estimate that in the United States, nearly one-third of those age 65 and older have diabetes, and three-quarters have diabetes or pre-diabetes (Diabetes Care, February 2009). Overweight is a risk factor for multiple health conditions, including diabetes.
