Just as we thought, neighborhoods influence well-being

Earlier this year, the results of the I’DGO studies in Europe (ICAA Research Review [12]17 May 2012) confirmed that neighborhood features and walkable access to local shops, services and green spaces doubled an older person’s chances of achieving recommended levels of ‘healthy walking,’ improved their level and range of activities, and increased feelings of life satisfaction.

Would older adults spend more time outdoors if the environment was right? The results of three studies among older adults in Great Britain were just released to answer that question. As the authors note, if an older person does not find it easy or enjoyable to get outdoors, they can spiral into poor physical health, less social contact with others and a reduced quality of life overall.

Research has shown that gardening promotes physical activity (ICAA Research Review, 9[1] January 2009) and relieves stress (Journal of Health Psychology, 16[1] January 2011). Gardening also seems to improve overall life satisfaction.
