Tech Talk: AI more effective than GP at diagnosing illnesses

A recent study showed for the first time that artificial intelligence (AI) was better than general practitioners (GPs) in diagnosing disease from written test cases. Forty-four GPs assessed an average of 159 cases each and achieved a mean score of 71.40%, whereas AI achieved 77.26%. The AI was integrated into a health app called Babylon. The AI will be included the publicly-available app following regulatory approvals in the UK and elsewhere, according to the company.

Tech Talk: $30Bn market for virtual, augmented, mixed reality by 2030

Many active-aging organizations are familiar with virtual reality software aimed at older adults with memory problems and those who want to enjoy armchair travel or education. But there are many more applications of this technology, as well as augmented (blend of digital content and real-world experiences) and mixed reality. Indeed, the market for these technologies is exploding and is predicted to reach US$30 billion within a decade. Tech Talk: Pandemic management – room for improvement?-8311

Tech Talk: Pandemic management – room for improvement?

How to meet public health requirements while safeguarding people's privacy isn't easy, however, as one article in the 82-page HIMSS Insights eBook, "COVID-19 and beyond," suggests. The Insights publication is a must-read for management, and for providers interested in the digital health space. Although it's aimed at healthcare systems, there is plenty of information relevant to senior living and other active-aging organizations that work with older adults (e.g., see the article "How healthy are health apps?").

I was alerted by MobiHealthNews literally several hours after the US Food Administration approved the first home-collected saliva sample kit for COVID-19 testing. It's worth reading the article for context on how these tests are moving forward and because this may be a convenient way for your constituents to be tested.

Tech Talk: Digital Health Indicator to accelerate global innovation-8023

Tech Talk: Digital Health Indicator to accelerate global innovation

The COVID-19 pandemic has reinforced that we are living in a global world with tremendous potential to connect people and organizations via technology. Reinforcing this perspective and aiming to maximize that potential, the non-profit Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), parent company of MobiHealthNews, recently launched the Digital Health Indicator. DHI is described as "an ecosystem that connects clinicians and provider teams with people, enabling (individuals) to manage their health and wellness using digital tools in a secure and private environment whenever and wherever care is needed." This is important because it moves all providers, in the US and elsewhere, into a global network.
