[GAME!] 50+ adults a growing force in tech gaming

Gamers ages 50+ are becoming a force in the tech marketplace, according to a recent survey from AARP Research. More than 52 million older adults play games of all sorts -- video games as well as traditional board games -- mostly because they feel it’s time well spent. The main reason is to have fun (86%).

Most gamers (84%) prefer to play on their smartphones, but 28% use a gaming console, up from just 13% in 2019. And they aren’t necessarily interested in grabbing the latest Xbox or Sony PlayStation. They don’t mind using an 8th Gen Nintendo Switch or even a Wii. Nevertheless, 30% use their smartphone exclusively.

Older gamers see numerous benefits from playing, according to the report. They often play with friends or family, either in person or online, which helps stave off social isolation, and they see some health benefits. Roughly eight in 10 play to relax (79%) and stay mentally sharp (78%).

Older gamers invest both  time and money -- on average, 12 hours of play per week and $49 within a six-month time frame -- on their gaming.  In 2023, older adults’ continued interest in gaming could lead to $2.5 billion in biannual spending on digital and physical game content (in-app purchases, virtual items, customization features), accessories (headsets, controllers, microphones), and hardware (gaming consoles, handheld devices).
