Eating ultraprocessed foods linked to fatty muscles
A diet high in ultra-processed foods is associated with higher amounts of fat stored inside thigh muscles, regardless of the number of calories consumed or level of physical activity, according to a study presented at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA). Higher amounts of intramuscular fat in the thigh could also increase the risk for knee osteoarthritis, the authors noted. Active-aging organizations might consider evaluating not only foods offered at mealtimes, but also available snacks.

11-pound weight gain linked to higher risk of total knee replacement
Relatively small increases in weight raise an individual's risk of knee osteoarthritis, as well as the need for a knee replacement, according to research presented in October at the International Congress on Obesity in Melbourne, Australia. Here's one more reason to promote a healthy weight among your constituents.

Sturdy, not flexible, shoes best for knee pain
A randomized controlled trial found that sturdy supportive shoes improve knee pain on walking and knee-related quality of life compared with flat flexible shoes. This evidence supports recommendations that previously had been based on expert opinion in the absence of data, and overturn the idea that flat flexible shoes that allow more of a "barefoot" experience may provide more benefit. Organizations can use this information to help constituents and staff who report knee pain, and for educational programming around footwear and foot conditions.

Call for action on osteoarthritis
In its first osteoarthritis update since 2010, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in collaboration with the Arthritis Foundation and the Osteoarthritis Alliance, calls for more awareness and action to curb the high prevalence of the condition. Of interest to the active-aging community, the report contains actionable steps and resources, as well as specific references for its recommendations.
