ICAA's Culinary Blueprint released to help senior living prepare for the "Wellness Era"

New blueprint offers senior living leaders a practical roadmap for transforming culinary, nutrition and hospitality into strategic drivers of wellness, resident experience and organizational performance.

VANCOUVER, BC [July 9, 2026] — The ICAA Culinary, Nutrition and Hospitality Network today released ICAA's Culinary Blueprint, a comprehensive strategic resource designed to help senior living organizations successfully navigate one of the most significant transformations in the history of senior living. According to ICAA's 2026 Trends Survey, 52% of senior living organizations now identify as wellness-based communities with care, reflecting a fundamental shift in how communities design environments, deliver services and define success.

As wellness becomes the lens through which organizations design environments, deliver services and measure success, ICAA's Culinary Blueprint helps senior living leaders transform culinary, nutrition and hospitality to meet evolving resident and consumer expectations while delivering on the promise of wellness-based living.

“The future of senior living won't be determined by whether organizations embrace wellness as a philosophy,” said Colin Milner, founder and CEO of the International Council on Active Aging®. “It will be determined by how deeply wellness is embedded into every aspect of the resident experience. Culinary, nutrition and hospitality are central to that transformation. ICAA's Culinary Blueprint shows leaders how to make it happen.”

Recognizing that meaningful transformation requires more than ideas, the Blueprint includes five implementation tools organizations can begin using immediately:

  • Language modernization guide to help communities replace institutional language with terminology that reflects dignity, hospitality and resident choice.
  • Culinary wellness readiness scale to assess organizational readiness for wellness-centered culinary, nutrition and hospitality.
  • ICAA Culture-change playbook to help leadership align teams, challenge legacy assumptions and drive organizational transformation.
  • Culinary value scorecard to measure success beyond traditional foodservice metrics by incorporating resident engagement, workforce culture, move-in influence, length of stay, brand value and organizational performance.
  • Field testing worksheet to help communities move from strategy to implementation.

Together, these tools help organizations assess their current state, identify opportunities for improvement and begin transforming culinary, nutrition and hospitality to better reflect the expectations of today's and tomorrow's older adults.

Informed by the Spring 2026 ICAA Culinary, Nutrition and Hospitality Think Tank and built on more than two decades of advancing wellness by the International Council on Active Aging® (ICAA), the Blueprint captures the collective expertise of senior living operators, executive chefs, registered dietitians, hospitality professionals, wellness leaders, clinicians and industry innovators. It translates that knowledge into practical frameworks, assessment tools and implementation strategies that organizations can apply immediately. These resources help senior living providers modernize operations, strengthen cross-functional collaboration, improve hospitality across every level of care, and measure the business impact of culinary wellness.

The result is a blueprint that moves beyond theory, providing organizations with practical guidance to modernize culinary, nutrition and hospitality as defining components of wellness-based living.

“Every major transformation begins with a common language and a practical roadmap,” said Sandy Webster, MSFS, Director of Global Strategic Initiatives for the ICAA Culinary, Nutrition and Hospitality Network. “ICAA’s Culinary Blueprint provides both. It gives organizations practical tools to assess where they are today, understand what must change and begin building the systems needed to succeed in the wellness era.”

Organizations are encouraged to download the Blueprint, begin using its implementation tools and participate in the ongoing work of the ICAA Culinary, Nutrition and Hospitality Network as the industry continues advancing culinary, nutrition and hospitality as essential components of wellness-based living.
